![]() # apt-get install extlinux syslinux syslinux-common My thanks to these links which, put together, gave me a working bootloader which has not changed, even after installing new kernels and modifying boot order. But, since these instructions are a direct lift from the following two links /linux/extlinux.html and /blog/linux/install/extlinux-debian.html, I'll just include here the several steps to get things going. The two links mentioned next contain much more detail and description of all that is going on. My instructions here are probably not much more clear than the several which I found, but I put them all together to form just one set of instructions. There are a few links for "how-to"s, all of which will get things done for you, but none of which is really a well written tutorial. Both syslinux and extlinux are "in stock" from "trusty" packages. ![]() So I plugged around and found extlinux or syslinux. Old and ornry, I couldn't accept that as the only answer. The only suggestions were to get used to grub2 like everyone else. I had posted about a problem with grub-legacy "grub-install" not working.
